Neko Jack | By Matthias Kühn

Neko-Jack is a playful jumping-jack figure forged from discarded scrap metal and transformed into the form of a cat. Resourceful by nature and playful by design, the work turns industrial cast-offs into a lively character made to leap, swing, and invite interaction.

Originally created for the “Jinny Playground” exhibition, Neko-Jack was presented outdoors on the streets of Jingumae 2-chome, Tokyo, where it remained on view for approximately two months. During this period, the sculpture was naturally exposed to rain, humidity, and changing weather conditions.

As a result, the metal has developed a natural surface patina and areas of authentic rust, giving the work an evolving, weathered character. These marks are a direct trace of its time in the city and form part of the sculpture’s material history. Despite its outdoor exposure, Neko-Jack remains fully functional and suitable for interaction and play.

The contrast between rugged, weathered metal and the joyful gesture of a jumping cat is at the heart of the work: discarded material is given a second life and transformed into something animated, playful, and full of character.

About Matthias Kühn

Matthias Kühn is a German metal artist and master blacksmith. His work combines traditional techniques with contemporary concepts, often incorporating found and discarded metal. After completing his apprenticeship, he traveled as a journeyman through several countries, including Australia, England, Ireland, and Austria. In 2023, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metal Art from the University of Gothenburg. Since 2024, he has held the official Meister title. Kühn’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in Japan, the USA, Sweden, and Estonia. He lives and works in Osnabrück, Germany.
